During my career I have been working mainly with actionsports, both summer and winter. Skiing and downhill biking is what have been my main targets in front of my camera. During later years I have more and more discovered portraits and lifestyle pictures.
I’m very proud to have been able to have fun and doing what I love, and at the same time building a career out of it. To be able to travel around the world with my friends and my camera, from France to Japan, Indonesia to Ireland, Sweden to Amsterdam and many more.

My three favorite images
Image 2: Niklas Matsson
This one is a pretty technical image. Shot in my hometown Åre in Sweden, a sunny day in April. The guy on the snowboard is Niklas Matsson, one of the best up and comers in Sweden today.
He is photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II N with a 70-200L 2,8 IS USM. Just behind the first kicker is an Elinchrome Ranger flash which is triggered by a pair of Pocket Wizards. I also used lube on the front lens to get the blurry feeling on the edges.
This image is the one that has worked its way furthest out in the world for me. It close to score a cover on Transworld Snowboarding a couple of years ago, been published in several magazines, and also went to semi final in Red Bull Illume (51-150th place of almost 26,000 competing images).
What makes it so special for me are the graphical elements, and there was a lot of hard work behind it. Niklas scored totally of three images in my book Adrenalin.

My three favorite images
A while ago I got the question, which are my own favorite images? I had no good answer on that on spot, it’s hard to just pick some images as favorites. And I dont usually dont admire my own work that way. Im more in to admire other artists work. But I had a hard time to let that question go, and after a lot of thinking and starring at my own images, I found three of them that I like a lot, and the history behind them.
Image 1:Lisa Miskovsky
This is a photo of the swedish artist Lisa Miskovsky, and is the first of my favorites. It’s not the best or the most technical photo I have produced, but it is the history behind it that makes it so special for me. I was 23 at the moment, and was working my ass of producing my first book, Adrenalin. One of my ideas was to have Lisa as one of the profiles telling their story in my book. She is a real inspiration to young girls in Sweden for both her musik and snowboarding when she was younger. I had been busting my ass of for weeks to sweet talk Lisa’s manager to pitch the idea for her. Not the most easy job in the world, her manager was tougher than Margaret Tatcher during her glory days.
But one sunny day back home in Åre the phone is ringing. It’s Lisa in the other end. And my god she was stoked to be a part of my book. The conversation lasted over an hour and I think I spoke three words or so during the whole phone call. A couple of weeks later im on my way to Lisa’s home, to spend the day with her, her new born baby and her mother. We had coffee, talked about Star Wars (Lisa has an amazing laser sword from the film), surfing, Queen, had an amazing dinner and just shot loads of images. Lisa told me about her career, the time as a up and coming snowboarder, and I explained my thoughts about my book and what I wanted to do in the future.
So what makes this image one of my favorite is not the image itself, but the story behind it. To be 23 years old and have Lisa as a part of my first book and the experience itself at her house.
Damn those signs….

Today I will honor someone.
Reine Barkered, one of my best friends.
The 25th of March Reine won the Freeride World tour 2012 in Verbier, France.
Now he is the best skier in the world.
In Åre were Reine lives there’s a shit load of talk and attitude about who is the coolest cat in town. Well…action says more than words.
I think skier JT Holmes sums up what the Freeride World Tour is all about
Cited from JT Holmes Facebook:
”I told Reine Barkered that if he did not win the Verbier Extreme, we were no longer friends. I guess he values our friendship! Way to go Reine!! Winning the Verbier Extreme is the proudest achievement in big mountain riding and something few can boast. You should be very proud, Reine. This is the competition that separates the men from the boys. I guess we know which side of that line Reine is on. Really stoked for you man!”
Reine, I’m unbelievably stoked and happy for you. I always believed you would win this!

Rasmus Sorsa, 23, is the boy from Finland who moved to Perth,...

Rasmus Sorsa, 23, is the boy from Finland who moved to Perth, Australia, via Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm, Sweden. Here in Australia he is studying a Bachelor of communications with advertising as his major. He grew up in Finland with his younger brother, his mom and his rock star of a dad, Ricki Sorsa. Finland’s equal to Sweden’s Tomas Ledin.
Why did you go to Australia?
I have always wanted to see and experience Australia. Diving and surfing is my two biggest passions here in life, and where else but Australia would you go to do that? Studying in America was one of my options but it did not appeal to me. But on the other hand I don’t really know what I want to study or work with in the future. Advertising is something that interests me, so we have to see were these years takes me.
What do you do at ECU?
I’m studying advertising, which I find interesting. But to be honest I might as well be standing on the beach renting out surfboards as work at an office in Hong Kong making campaigns for Coca Cola. All I really want is doing whatever makes me happy.
What has been most challenging this far?
It has been starting an academic education. To get everything right on paper, and not only to express it visually. At Berghs, it was more a practical approach witch suited me more.
Dreams and what about the future?
I think I have the classical dreams. I want to be happy, se the world and live my life as I want it.
Motto?
Treat others, as you want to be treated yourself.
What does inspire you?
My dad Ricki Sorsa. From young age, he know exactly what he wanted do to, and he dedicated his life to it. To be an artist, working with music, to sing, and he became one of the biggest in Finland (Represented Finland in the Euro Vision Song Contest in 1981 with his song “Reggae OK”).
Me however have no clue what I want to do at the moment. I’m the kind of guy that watches “The fast and the furious” and want to be a car mechanics, or the X-games and want to be the next Shaun White.
Tell about a special happening in your life?
When I was younger I used to practice gymnastics for a hobby. One time there I had an accident where I dislocated and broke the fifth and sixth vertebrae of the neck. If my bones had moved just an inch I would have ben paralyzed or in worst case dead now. At the moment I didn’t really feel anything, but now looking back on it I’m probably damn lucky to be alive.
What is your own view of success?
To have freedom to do what I want, and to be financial independent. It’s not really about buying material things, as it is about not having to worry about how to pay for food, rent, bills and maybe future kids. Also to be able to travel as I want, spending time with my family and friends. But I would also help others that don’t have it to easy in life.
Tell about your semester at Berghs?
I really enjoyed Berghs. Their way of teaching was much more practical than ECU, which suited me well. They are not a slave to the grind about all the academic rules and laws you obey down here.
I have to say that the students are different too. At Berghs everyone was unbelievable talented and dedicated to their work. Here at ECU, which is a much bigger university you see some people skipping classes just because they can’t be bothered to go to a lecture, and studying just for the sake of studying. At Berghs everyone was there because we wanted to and because we had a burning ambition for communication. Also coming from Finland to live in Stockholm was an experience itself.
You did two major projects at Berghs, Brand-X and Bahco. How was that?
My Brand-X group called ourselves; “The board of directors”, and we received an honorable mention from Berghs and the client, witch was very inspiring and fun. I got along very well with my group. Everyone was really talented in their area and kept a professional quality throughout everything. When we got the idea, everything just took of.
Bahco was as well as Brand-X a briefing from a real client, but this time it was only for us in the Bachelor class. It was a part of the marketing communication unit we were doing at the time. There my group won first price for best idea and pitch.
You’re an amazing presenter and performer, which you really showed at the Brand-X and Bahco presentations, what is your secret?
My dad is an entertainer and has the stage in his blood, so I guess I take after him. But I like to be on stage. When I was younger I sang in a band and even went to theater school as a kid, and my self-confidence is always sky high. But I would say that it’s my body language that makes me a good presenter. To sell and present your idea you have to be the Alfa male, you have to get the audience to follow you. The human being is a pack animal, who follows the dominant leader. The thing is that you can be as good as you want to sell and present, but the idea is crucial. Without the good idea, you’re screwed.
You are diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia and learning difficulties, how do you deal with that?
I actually don’t see it as an obstacle; I managed to get in to Berghs, which is supposedly one of the best communication schools out there. Here at ECU it was a bit harder. I handed in my TOEFEL-test (English knowledge test), with good margins on all parts, beside the writing part by obvious reasons. By some reason they didn’t accept my medical certificate that I am diagnosed with dyslexia, so I had to re-take another test on location. (Which Rasmus passed by good margin with out any consideration of his dyslexia from ECU). My restlessness and need to always be active, is more a part of my persona and nature than a medical condition.
Can you turn that into an advantage, something that others don’t have?
Because I don’t like to do writing and misspelling, it has made me a very verbal and visual person.
I don’t have any problems to talk in front of people; I would say that I’m much more socially capable than others that might be timid or shy in social situations.
If you had the chance, would you change something in your life?
Not a chance, I’m proud of everything I have done and accomplished this far.

My studies here at ECU, in Perth have slowly begun. We have been having lectures and tutorials for a couple of weeks now, found and apartment, and settling in with the new stuff we encounter here.
And for me, my first assignments are coming up. I’m cutting a trailer for a film, I’m writing a short film script, analysing a movie, and I’m also shooting a still life series of my choice. I’ll post everything when I get it back from Uni.
I have also made myself familiar with the photo studio they have here. I did a portrait session with Emily, who is in my Digital video unit. Mostly using one or two flashes on those ones.
Cheers

Some time has gone here in Perth. We have found a nice apartment in a part of town called Northbridge, or “Chinatown” as Rasmus like to call it (We have lots of Asian restaurants and stores here).
Joakim and Rasmus have finally made their way here, and we have shown them around Perth.
Today we took a bus trip one of the other beaches here, called Scarborough Beach. Wished for some surfers, but not waves to talk about today, so no one as far as the eye could see unfortunately.
Posting some snapshots from today, and yesterday night outside our apartment.

First update form Perth! And YES it is spelled with an H. Have been missing that letter on the last updates (blaming the jet lag!).
I’m throwing up a bunch of pictures for you!
Haven’t seen that much of the city yet, but it’s a nice “little” city. The mixture of old buildings and then the house next to it is a skyscraper is very surrealistic.
The weather is very hot, even if it´s cloudy outside. Believe I will ignite my self when there is blue skies and sun outside…
Today we were at the university, ECU, and made our enrolments for semester 1 and 2. This is going to be very nice, looking forward to start the Film & Video courses. I´ll be skipping the first courses of Photomedia due my experience as a photographer, so I´m doing some journalism courses instead.
I´ll leave you all with the images, and will write more soon!
Cheers from Australia!

Arlanda airport

Arlanda airport

Arlanda airport
So, right now as I write this, im sitting at Arlanda airport in Stockholm, Sweden. Im waiting for my friends Daniela and Isabella to arrive in a couple of hours. Today we have a major change in our lifes. Today we are moving to Perth, Australia.
For the last six months we have been studying at Berghs School of Communication, one of the best in the world. We all (all 31 of us in the Bachelor class) have been studying a more overview looking semester of the communication industry. And now, we all are going to become specialist in our selected subjects. We are eight people who are going to Perth, five is going to Sidney, were three were form the Billy Blue university, taking a semester with us in Stockholm. And the rest of the class is going to San Francisco, with two exceptions for London and Chicago.
Now all of us have 2,5 and 3-3,5 years ahead of us in different universitiesaround the globe.
Myself is going to have studied two programs in the end, and some extra courses. I’m going to work more on my photography. There is so much you can learn and work with in the subject. Everything from shooting fashion in a studio with super advanced equipment and sophisticated light setups, to work in war-affected countries with just a small and reliable camera to take your pictures with. To learn and work even more with the way you interact and work with the person your portraying, Can you really capture he/she’s personality?
I´m also going for something totally new for me (almost), film. I have never filmed before, or worked in an editing program. But I believe I can be good at it. I have my career and experience in photography behind me, which I hope is going to be helpful. I know imagery and how do it good. Now it’s a new challenge in storytelling and how to work with not just one image at the time. I´m really looking forward to this course to see what it has to offer for me.
And at last, I´m improving my writing skills (and English grammar) with some journalism courses. I have always loved to write, but never got a hold of it as I want to. I have been writing photography and flash tutorials before, and lots of articles and editorial texts, but not as good as I would like to. So to top it all, the journalism courses are going to be a killer!
I think we all are going to have a blast down there, and all the others in San Francisco. And I´m sure of that I will meet some of them in the future during work!
Im also thinking of my time in Åre, Sweden, and how that has affected me as a photographer, but more of that in the future.
Take care all of you, and to all my friends and family, I will miss you unbelievably much. Right now we have about 24 hours more or less of flying ahead of us!
Cheers
Johan

We lost great photographers this year. They photographed Presidents and popes, rock stars and rebels. They risked their lives, and some of them gave their lives, so that we can better understand our own, the place we inhabit, and more importantly, the areas of the world we would otherwise never see. Getty Images Partners with the International Committee of the Red Cross to launch its new ‘Healthcare in Danger’ Campaign ’Award-winning Reportage photographer Tom Stoddart, shoots new ‘Healthcare in Danger’ campaign and sponsorship of new TEDx event ignite partnershipLONDON, 29th November, 2011 -Getty Images is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). As part of the agreement, Reportage by Getty Images sponsored the ICRC’s TEDx event, TEDxRC², which took place in Geneva and across the globe, via webcast, on Sunday 27th November. As part of the partnership, award-winning Reportage photographer Tom Stoddart has shot the organisation’s recent ICRC campaign, ‘Healthcare in Danger’. The initiative aims to address the widespread and severe impact of illegal and forceful acts that obstruct the delivery of sound health care in armed conflicts and other situations of violence. The print campaign launched in August, 2011 and can be seen across multiple platforms, including print and public transport. Getty Images will continue to support the ICRC over the next two years by producing a body of work from its Reportage photographers which will be published in magazines around the world, viewable across digital platforms from Tumblr to Ipad Apps and will culminate in a touring exhibition.Nick Evans-Lombe, Chief Operating Officer, Getty Images said: “We are delighted to partner with the ICRC for its ‘Healthcare in Danger’ campaign and beyond. Through the images that Tom shot for the print campaign, to our involvement in the TEDx event, we hope to help raise awareness and highlight the importantissues faced in war-torn communities.”‘Multiplying the power of humanity’ was the theme of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s first-ever TEDx event, called TEDxRC². It lasted for two hours and focused on innovative and thought-provoking ideas for tackling the world’s toughest humanitarian challenges.Sponsored by a number of global brands including Reportage by Getty Images, the event featured seven speakers, including Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, with around 700 invitees attending. At the cocktail party following the event, a giant 10 x 6 meter screen presented stunning award winning images from the Reportage photographers including a very powerful selection from The Arab Spring.“Violence against health-care facilities and personnel must end. It’s a matter of life and death,” said Yves Daccord, the director-general of the ICRC. “The human cost is staggering: civilians and fighters often die from their injuries simply because they are prevented from receiving timely medical assistance.”“Addressing the issue effectively will require humanitarian dialogue, respect for the law and the adoption of appropriate measures by States, armed forces and non-State actors,” said Mr Daccord. “The ICRC is committed to working with all concerned in order to secure effective and impartial health care. Deliberate assaults on health-care personnel, facilities and transports, as well as on the wounded and sick, violate international law. The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols set out the right of the wounded and sick – combatants and civilians alike – to be respected and protected during armed conflict and to receive timely medical treatment.”

I had been waiting for two weeks to get a time in the studio in school. I had another session booked, and in mind, but unfortunately that one didn’t happend. So I asked my classmate Frida if she wanted to help me out a bit. Thinks the session lasted for around 40 minutes, due lack of time during other projects. But this is one shot we came up with!

We’re pleased to announce the launch of a new book by Veronique de Viguerie and her journalist colleague Manon Querouil-Bruneel, ‘Carnets De Reportages Du XXIeme Siecle’ (’21st Century Reportage Diaries’).

Report From World Press Photo Masterclass
Once a year, 12 young photographers are chosen to attend the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass, where they are paired with 6 industry professionals for an intense week of critiques, discussions, and portfolio reviews. Our own Antonio Bolfo, Sebastian Liste, Kitra Cahana, and Alinka Echeverria attended this year’s class.
It was a transformative experience, as related by Bolfo:
“The World Press Photo’s Joop Swart Masterclass was, by all accounts, an amazing week. I was not sure what to expect, and was immediately surprised by the high caliber operation that World Press was running. Another thing I noticed right off the bat was the sincerity and humility that all the students had. This fostered an open learning environment that allowed us to be honest with ourselves and with each other. Everyone took away something different from their week in Amsterdam, and for me the week was about re-learning who I was as an artist and photographer. I learned the importance of personalizing my work, of interpreting the people and stories that I try to be a part of. I understand that for me it is not good enough to compose an aesthetically good photo, I need to digest what it is I am seeing and express that which I am feeling. It was an invaluable experience, one that I can honestly say changed the way I see and feel. I am forever in debt to Aidan Sullivan, Alison Morley, and Michele McNally for nominating me and the World Press Photo judges for selecting me for this year’s masterclass.”
Prior to the class each student prepared a photo essay around the topic of Respect. A selection of their images is above (and some images from the class), please see a larger edit from all of the students here.

Found an AD I did for KRAV. Just a small resolution one. Not the kind of portraits I use to shoot, but it was fun! What do you think?

Frida on the cover

Changed the image for the frontside of the website. I decided to put Frida´s 3D image. Getting a lot of attention and buzz about it! What do you think?
Soon on the the Facebook page I will launch a competition, were you can win a signed ex of Adrenalin!
Product shoot for the new book!
Just finished up the last pictures for the up coming book. Made some product pictures for it, that turned out well. My co-writher Kristofer was there as an assistant and stylist and our friend Henrik Utter [Otter] was also there as entertainment. Got good feelings about this one. It is not even finished yet, but close to catch up with Adrenalin in sales.
Making charity AD´s for Save the children
Got an assignment in my copywriting class to make an AD for a charity.
I did choose Save the children. And my idea was “What is your reality”. To use everyday situations in our life here in Sweden, and to use a similar picture showing exposed children in the same situation. And as usual my visual cravings took the over hand instead of the text…

My first Ad.

And the second one.
As you see I am NOT a designer at all. I just have the ideas in my head, and trying to show them.
Non of those picture is copyrighted to me. It is just for schoolwork.
3D image in Fashion?

Frida, who is on the design part of my class (half is on design and other half is in copywriting). She had a task to create a fashion brand, with a website, hangtags and everything. She asked me to shoot the look book and advertising pictures for it.

Frida has been modeling for some time and wanted to put her self in front of my lens. Her idea and concept was “Embrace”. She had bought silky cloth to wrap around her. Pretty quick, when she told me the concept, was that I wanted to make an 3D image. After some research we executed it after all Frida´s images was taken. It turned out pretty well, going to make a re-make of it to get the 3D effect even more, but it works!

This is how I lightened the photo.
If any one of you have done some 3D images, or have some tips, I would love to se and hear about it!
